Part 19PESTICIDE MONITORING IMPROVEMENTS

This chapter outlines improvements for pesticide monitoring, focusing on data management systems, foreign pesticide information, and analytical methods to enhance the FDA's ability to ensure food safety regarding pesticide residues.

What this part covers

  • Establish computerized data management systems for recording, summarizing, and evaluating pesticide residue monitoring results in food products.
  • Identify gaps in pesticide monitoring programs, including pesticides, food products, and sources (countries and domestic).
  • Detect trends in pesticide residues and emerging public health concerns.
  • Focus testing resources on residues that pose a public health concern.
  • Prepare summaries of analyzed food products, including imported and domestic, number of samples, detected residues and levels, compliance status, violation rates, and actions taken.
  • Summarize the volume of food products imported into the US, by country of origin and district of entry.
  • Enter into cooperative agreements with major food-importing countries to improve the assurance of compliance with pesticide tolerance requirements.
  • Obtain information on pesticides used in food production from foreign countries, or from other sources if agreements are not feasible.
  • Develop a long-range plan and timetable for research into new and improved analytical methods for detecting multiple pesticide residues and rapid detection methods.
  • Review the cost-effectiveness of using rapid pesticide analytical methods to improve monitoring and enforcement.
